In a short called meeting Tuesday night, the Walton County Board of Education unanimously approved Nathan Franklin, assistant superintendent for the Walton County School District, as the lone finalist for the position of the system's next superintendent.

Franklin, who has served in a variety of positions around the county, including a tenure as principal of Loganville High School before taking the job of assistant superintendent four years ago, was the only one of four prospective finalists to attend Tuesday's meeting.

Franklin, once formally approved in January at the board's first monthly meeting of the year, will be set to take over the superintendent position from Gary Hobbs, who announced his retirement from the position earlier this year.

Hobbs, who also served as LHS principal at one time before taking the superintendent position, will continue to serve as superintendent until the end of the academic year.

Per state law, the school board is not required to release the names of any of the other three prospective superintendent candidates, as only Franklin was officially named a finalist for the position.

Franklin, who has three children in the WCSD system, said he was pleased to win the job.

"It's certainly an honor to be tasked with this job," Franklin said. "I"m looking forward to working with our board. I'm excited about the opportunity."
