MONROE, Ga. — Walton County is under a flash flood watch until Thursday afternoon.

As the remnants of Hurricane Michael move across the Southeast, heavy rainfall will be possible across portions of central Georgia. Within the watch area, widespread rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches will be likely, with locally higher amounts possible.

Several creeks and rivers could rise out of their banks, closing roads and having an impact on homes, businesses and farms.

High water may not recede until well after the rain has ended.

Hurricane Michael is a major Category 4 storm which made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, on Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly before 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 155 mph and was moving north-northeast at 14 mph.

Michael was centered about 5 miles northwest of Mexico Beach and about 20 miles southeast of Panama City, Florida.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City said Michael is expected to have a significant impact on central and large parts of north Georgia on Wednesday. Torrential rainfall, strong winds and possible tornadoes will affect much of the region Wednesday afternoon and evening, well ahead of the arrival of the center of the storm.

Gov. Nathan Deal has extended a state of emergency in Georgia to more than 100 counties, including Morgan and Oconee.
