MONROE, Ga. — Anna Howard, a senior at George Walton Academy, was recognized as the winner for The Southern Pen Bookshop’s Christmas Short Story.

Howard’s entry, “Walking Winter,” was selected from all of the entries received. The contest was open to all high school students in Walton County.

Vickie Bley, owner of The Southern Pen Bookshop, presented Howard with a certificate, leather-bound journal, fountain pen, and cash reward of $25 last Thursday evening.

“The only requirement for the contest was that each story have a Christmas theme. We left it open to the writers as to if they wanted to create a fiction or nonfiction piece, subject matter, and the type of genre.”

Vickie Bley shared what made Howard’s entry stand out from all the entries.

“Anna’s story was unique and abstract. The pacing of her writing, phrasing of words, and imagery made the reader see, feel and hear everything. You imagine yourself taking a winter’s walk and soaking in each scene.”

Howard’s story is available on The Southern Pen’s website at southernpenbookshop.com.

Bley said, “It is our goal to host two short story contests each year to students in Walton County — one in the spring and the second at Christmas. We plan to have guidelines for the spring contest on our website in January and will broaden the age group.”

The Southern Pen Bookshop is located inside The Monroe Mercantile in downtown Monroe. The shop opened during the summer and carries titles by independent or self-published authors.
