MONROE, Ga. — Marvin Sorrells, a former chief judge of the Alcovy Circuit, Walton County sheriff and lawmaker has died.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced the death online Saturday night.

Sorrells was sheriff in 1962 after his father, Sheriff C.J. “Doc” Sorrells, was killed in the line of duty.

As a state representative from 1969-73, Sorrells introduced the legislation that created the Alcovy Circuit of Newton and Walton counties. Then-Gov. Jimmy Carter signed the law, which pulled Walton out of the Western Circuit with Clarke and Oconee counties and removed Newton County from the Stone Mountain Circuit.

Sorrells became a Juvenile Court judge in 1973 after leaving the General Assembly, then joined the Superior Court in 1988. Within a few months he was appointed chief judge as Judge Tom Ridgeway became ill.

Sorrells stepped down at the end of his term Dec. 31, 2004. Monroe attorney Eugene Benton succeeded him and remains on the court. John Ott is now serving as the chief judge.

Sorrells did assume senior status after his retirement and maintained an office in the Historic Walton County Courthouse, the restoration of which he guided as an adviser in the 1990s.

Sorrells served as the fifth Superior Court Judge in 2009 after then-Gov. Sonny Perdue signed the law creating it, but before Ken Wynne was appointed as the newest judge.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen recently unveiled a new chicken sandwich, which many people said is better than the Original Chicken Sandwich offered by Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A. Other fast-food chains jumped in with their two cents' worth. What do you think?
