As it has for all of 2018, Walton County’s unemployment rate remained below the national and state rates last month, according to numbers from the Department of Labor.

The county posted a 3.8 percent rate, while Georgia and the nation were both at 4.2 percent.

The number of jobless people grew slightly from May, when the number was 3.3 percent in Walton.

Mark Butler, the Georgia Labor Commissioner, commented on the unemployment rate for the Northeast Georgia Region, which includes Walton, in a press release.

He said the jump could be attributed to the number of summer job seekers, mostly high school and college students on summer break, looking for work. An uptick during the summer months is common, he added.

Nationwide, the rate is hovering around 10-year lows, comparable to the rates before the Great Recession hit in 2008.

Wages remain a concern, having not budged much during the same time
