GRAYSON, Ga. — A contractor hit two gas lines near a busy Gwinnett County intersection, snarling traffic between Loganville and Snellville during the afternoon rush hour.

Gwinnett firefighters responded at 2:27 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a gas leak at the intersection of Cooper Road and Athens Highway to a 911 call of a gas line struck while drilling.

Fire crews arrived six minutes later to find a 6-inch steel main and 2-inch plastic line were struck. Firefighters immediately began to shut down the roadways and contacted Atlanta Gas Light for assistance.

A hazmat team arrived, began to monitor gas readings in the area and established a small hot zone.

A convenience store and car stereo installation shop were evacuated, and a fire spokesman said the wind was assisting in dissipating the gas.

AGL had two crews on scene working to secure the leaks.

Athens Highway (U.S. 78) was closed westbound at Rosebud Road, and Cooper Road was closed north of Athens Highway. Gwinnett police officers were on scene directing traffic.

Eastbound lanes of Athens Highway were open to traffic.

The Gwinnett Department of Fire and Emergency Services dispatched two engines, a hazmat unit and a battalion chief.
