School board members grapple with income that falls a bit short

Leaders can't pass budget until tax digest set

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. — The Social Circle Board of Education is still trying to balance its preliminary budget for the upcoming school year as a current shortfall in revenue has the school district looking to its fund balance to cover expenditures for the next year.

The board met Wednesday night in its third budget meeting to discuss what projects to adopt and which to leave out as it deals with the projected $19.1 million budget. With only $17.5 million in projected revenue for the coming year, that will leave the system dipping into the fund balance for more than $1.5 million to make up the difference.
