Williamson, Cowsert see hope in possible Convention of States

Duo among almost 100 who attended Mount Vernon event

Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, is where lawmakers from Virginia and Maryland met in 1785 to discuss issues of mutual concern. That gathering put the ball in motion for the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia two years later.

Georgia Sen. Bill Cowsert, R-Athens, and state Rep. Bruce Williamson, R-Monroe, were among a bipartisan contingent of almost 100 state legislators from 32 states who gathered at the historic site Dec. 7 to discuss rules and procedures for a possible Convention of States. The goal was to lay the groundwork for the state-led process for crafting an amendment to the U.S. Constitution potentially forcing the federal government to balance a budget each year.
