Walton resident celebrated 116th birthday Sunday with family

MONROE — Surrounded by family, Besse Cooper reached another landmark number as the world’s oldest person turned 116 Sunday.

Cooper — the eighth person on record and fourth American to reach the age of 116 — celebrated the day at her Monroe nursing home with more than two dozen family members, who said she handled the day quite well for her age.
