Schnabel: My grandfather wouldn’t care much for today’s world

On April 6, 1917, Congress declared war on Germany. Four months later, on Aug. 6, my grandfather, James Delaney, chief gunner’s mate in the U.S. Navy, became the first American prisoner of World War I.

Delaney, chief gunner’s mate on the SS Campana, a freighter with two deck guns, came under fire in the Bay of Biscay, off the coast of France. A German U-boat, U-61, began firing its larger deck guns at the freighter. After a three-hour battle, when the Campana had run out of ammunition and had been hit three times, Delaney acquiesced to the captain and gave orders to abandon ship.
