‘Dear White People’ hits close to home

Posted: Wednesday, October 22, 2014 12:00 am

This weekend I had the pleasure of viewing “Dear White People,” a comedy/satire released last Friday that tackles often unsettling and difficult conversations of a “postracial,” post-Obama world. What struck me most about it was how accurate it was. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie sum up the experience of being a person of color at a predominantly white university.

Having just graduated from the University of Georgia a little over a year ago, I can assure you the scenarios and one-liners hit very close to home. I’ll yell, “Go Dawgs!” from the top of my lungs until I die, but there were many times UGA wasn’t too unlike the fictional Winchester University.
