The Tribune is unfair to Walton Republicans

Posted: Saturday, February 10, 2018 12:00 am

My Granddaddy said to never argue with the man that uses ink to publish papers, but with your newspaper stating that Joe Chapmans’ situation and the Moore’s Ford tragedy are the two most important news articles for the year, and your treatment of the Republican Party, were about as much as I could stand and I feel obligated to respond.

First the Joe Chapman incident in Florida. Joe is the best sheriff in Walton County in my lifetime.  He is by far the most popular public figure in the county, and to continue to degrade him over a minor incident is ridiculous. He reacted probably the same as I and most other people when confronted with the same situation.  There were no punches thrown only a verbal altercation with two known felons, one who is now serving time for attempted murder.  He admitted to not forwarding this information to the state authorities, but the only reason for not reporting  it seems to me, is that it was so minor, it was dropped, and he did not feel that it was necessary.  There seems to me no other explanation for if he had, there would have been no further repercussions.  I have been told by the Attorneys General’s office had he done so  it would not have been processed in the way it was, and had not two local anti-Joe Chapman lawyers who vigorously supported his opponent (who only got 17 percent of the vote), had not hotly pursued it. Then the local paper took it up and made  a great deal of it.  They were then forced to do something. And in spite of what you have written about a March meeting that will decide whether he will retain his office, I have been assured that the matter is already  over and the matter is closed with minor penalties.
