Zoning column missed point in many ways

Re: your Opinion article “Old Zoning Rules Create Recent Debate.”  First, I find it disturbing that Andrew Kenneson wrote an opinion piece on this issue when he was also the reporter who covered the meeting the residents of the Pollock neighborhood had with Paul Rosenthal.  I was a journalist for 42 years.  I was taught to deal only in facts and to keep my personal opinions to myself.  Even during my years at CNN, as it was beginning its hard turn to the left, several anchors and reporters were fired for expressing personal opinions on the air.  This raises questions about The Tribune’s standards of journalistic ethics.

Second, what Kenneson’s opinion piece did not mention were the reasons Pollock residents gave for not wanting the “interconnectivity” that is almost universally worshipped by today’s politicians and Chambers of Commerce.  We are a quiet, self-contained neighborhood, one in which the only non-resident traffic is the occasional UPS truck, and for that very reason, one in which people from other parts of Monroe come to walk and run — and manage to find us even though we’re not “interconnected!”  An online search will take you to myriad traffic studies which make clear that increased traffic in residential areas always leads to lower property values, as well as other issues including road safety, increased crime and pollution.  Neighborhood opposition to Paul Rosenthal’s plans are limited to the connector street alone, not to the development itself which fronts on Alcovy Street.
