Hurricanes repeat as region champions

MAHS holds off War Eagles in 28-21 thriller

Posted: Saturday, November 2, 2013 12:00 am

MONROE — The Hurricane’s Alfred King recovered a Chestatee fumble at the Monroe Area 19-yard line with 8 minutes, 41 seconds to play. That turned out to be the play of the game as Kwan Brooks scored on the first play from scrimmage, allowing the ’Canes to come away with a 28-21 win and the Region 8-AAAA championship for the second consecutive season.

“I love these kids,” an emotional Monroe Area head coach Matt Fligg said after the game. “We challenged them at halftime when we were down 21-14 and they responded. We haven’t trailed in a game all season and I couldn’t be prouder. Chestatee has a great team. They played with a lot of heart and stuck it to us all night. We had to fight for everything we got.”
