Cover Story: Road to Atlanta

It’s a short drive to Atlanta, but the road there is long for local teams.

Just 40 miles lies between the Walton County line and Georgia State’s football stadium in Atlanta. While the physical road to the Georgia High School Association’s new home for the state football championships is short and well-traveled, the metaphorical road teams use to get there will be long and winding with the path more treacherous the closer teams get to the stadium.

While Walton County has seen a few state champions in football, never has a team in Walton County won a state title in the GHSA. The closest was Carver High School which won a Georgia Interscholastic Association state title in the school’s final year before desegregation. George Walton Academy won four titles in the Georgia Independent School Association in 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2009 while Loganville Christian Academy won back-to-back state titles from 2012-2013 in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama.
