New year brings reflections

Published December 27, 2009

The end of the year is always a time to reflect on the triumphs and tragedies of the previous 12 months.

It is the last time to run through the good and bad of the previous year, taking one last lesson from the past.

It’s like a cleansing process really — a chance to shed the old skin and wear in the new.

Here are just some of the things I’ll remember from 2009.

Watching my daughter grow. Is there anything more amazing than seeing a baby take her first steps, say her first word and smile when she looks at you?

Nope.

The first year of Barack Obama’s presidency. It’s not good when you find yourself repeating the phrase, “Yeah I voted for him, what’s it to you?”

Watching Obama’s presidency is like watching baseball in May. You find yourself thinking, “Man, this team stinks, but it’s still early.” Well it’s still early, but I’m starting to wonder if Team Obama has a deep enough rotation to make a run for the playoffs.

The death of Michael Jackson. I know, I know. Many of you must be wondering why this is important to me.

After all, his closets have more skeletons in them than a Wal-Mart in October. But when I was a child he was the man. He was the reason I have had a lifelong obsession with music and his death, for some reason, put an official end to my childhood.

I reluctantly saw “This is It,” the movie chronicling the days before his death and realized what an amazing and talented performer he really was.

Another futile year for the Buffalo Bills and my fantasy sports teams. I don’t understand why I continue to torture myself year after year rooting for the Buffalo Bills. They brought in Terrell Owens, who I think is still one of the best players in the game. However, the Bills are worse than they were last year, they fired their coach and they are one year closer to possibly moving out of the Nickel City.

My three fantasy football teams brought me more pain than joy. I made the playoffs in two out of three leagues, but stumbled in the playoffs.

At least I still have the Atlanta Hawks.

Happy new year all.
