Forget spreading the wealth

Published November 18, 2009

So I was on Facebook the other day, just checking out what my friends had to say.

One really ticked me off. A law student said he hoped Congress would pass health care reform soon so he could get some insurance.

Think about that. He doesn’t have insurance, so he wants you to buy some for him.

Just reach down in your wallet and find that bottom dollar, then pull it out to buy coverage for somebody you don’t know. Not because you want to, but because someone you don’t know wants you to.

After all, he can’t be expected to have insurance of his own. Oh, sure, he didn’t have to further his education. He could have gone into the workforce, or gotten a job that offers insurance and worked there around his school hours. But he didn’t want to, so why don’t you just pay for him?

I had hopes a government takeover of the health care system would be averted, but results of an Associated Press poll released Tuesday make me wonder.

In it, a majority of Americans polled favor taxes on people who make more than $250,000 a year. That’s even more punitive than how the House-passed bill would pay for reform.

I know I don’t make that much, and most of you don’t either, but still, why should “the rich” have to pay for health care? I know, there are horror stories out there about people who couldn’t get insurance for a family member in need. I get that. Fix those problems, but don’t force people to pay for the masses’ health care.

Unfortunately, too many people think there’s some massive pit of money just set aside for taking care of their every problem.

The money comes from working people, and the more I hear from those who don’t intend to work but expect me to give over the money I earn in a job, the more frustrated I get.

Wake up, folks. The money pit is funded by each of us, and for all of us throwing our tax dollars in, there are folks just waiting to take some out.

It’s a cycle, and these poll results say folks want it to continue.
