Lions to open new facility tonight
Published September 4, 2009
Finally! After a pair of 11th-hour cancellations by opposing teams, Loganville Christian Academy gets its 2009-10 football season underway tonight with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against Young American Christian School (Conyers) at Hawkins Field on the LCA campus.
LCA hosted Pinecrest Academy (Cumming) in a full-contact scrimmage last week, but tonight’s contest marks the official dedication of football facilities on the LCA campus.
Andre King, head Lion, said the LCA coaches learned a lot about his young team after watching game film from last week’s warm-up.
“We got a good look at what worked and what did not,” King said.“We stopped ourselves offensively with missed and dropped passes, but the good news is we had solid protection and we ran the ball pretty well. We saw some evidence of first game jitters — even though we’ve been practicing for five weeks. There’s nothing quite like playing against someone else to show you where you need to improve.”
YACS, another Georgia Independent Schools Association team, is playing a junior varsity schedule as is LCA. The Eagles lost their season opener last week to Randolph Southern 41-6 and are looking to put one in the win column tonight.
“Even though we lost the scrimmage to Pinecrest (8-6), we got a good chance to run our game plan in a live situation,” King said.
LCA’s Matt Kirkland will start at quarterback in tonight’s contest.
Jonathan Zorger and Harrison Monda will share running back duties and the Lions will have veteran performers Brett Gealy and Hunter Cook at wide receiver.
“We don’t have a lot of depth so everyone who suits up will have to contribute in order for us to be successful,” said King. “There will be a lot of guys going three ways — offense, defense and special teams — so everyone will have a role.”
