Devils hit the water in swim meet opener

Published November 22, 2009

The Loganville High School boys and girls swim teams began the 2009-10 season in a Nov. 14 competition at the Steve Lundquist Aquatic Center in Jonesboro.

Coach Samantha Johnson’s squad placed seventh overall against top-flight talent from around the Atlanta area.

“We had a great weekend of swimming,” said Johnson. “We had a lot of swimmers finish in the top 10 in many different events. I am happy to have a few swimmers qualify for the state meet and swim some best times.”

Max Berendson won the only gold medal for Loganville with a first-place finish in the men’s 50-yard freestyle event. Berendon logged a winning time of 23 minutes. He later posted a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Both swims were state qualifying efforts.

Sydney Roberts also enjoyed a productive day, placing in different events. Roberts was third in the women’s 200 free (2:14.64), teamed with Chelsea Roberts, Courtney Marker and Rachel Smith for fifth place in the 200 free relay and combined with the same threesome for a fourth-place showing in the 400 free relay.

Madison Ramey finished ninth in the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:25.94. Smith took ninth in the 100 free with a time of 1:02.76. Courtney Marker was ninth (2:43.07) in the women’s 200 individual medley.

Jass Leach, David Jones, Alandas McGraw and Berendson swam a state-qualifying fifth-place time in the men’s 200 free relay.

“We have a bigger team this year and I hope to see us competing at a higher level,” Johnson said.
