Walnut Grove passes 1st test
Published October 18, 2009
Region 8-AA No. 3 seed Walnut Grove High School advanced Tuesday to the Sweet 16 round of the state AA softball in Franklin with a best-of-three series victory over Heard County, a second seed from Region 5.
Kara Patterson did yeoman’s duty, pitching three complete games for the Lady Warriors. The opposing coaches determined they would need to play all three games on Tuesday night if the first two games were split due to the threat of severe weather moving in. As it turned out, the decision was prudent one.
In the first game, Walnut Grove started slowly and left runners in scoring position several times, failing to score when key hits could not be produced. Patterson held Heard County to no hits through six innings, but in the bottom of the seventh, Heard County won the game 1-0 with a single, sacrifice bunt and sharp single down the left field line that scored its only run and ended the game.
Walnut Grove fought back in the second game, winning 7-2 when the bats came to life. The offense was keyed by a three-run homer by catcher Hannah Reppert. Reppert figured in a key defensive play when Heard had the bases loaded in the fourth inning. A sharp grounder to shortstop was fielded and thrown home by Sam Jenkins, cutting down the lead runner. Reppert’s quick pivot and throw to first base completed a double play to end the Heard County threat.
In the final game, Walnut Grove jumped out to an early lead. Heard County chipped away at the lead but could not catch up to the Lady Warriors as they clinched the series with a 7-5 win.
With the first-round victory, the Warriors qualified to take on the state's No. 1-ranked team, Buford, on Friday afternoon at the Wolves home field in the second round of the tournament.
Look for results in Wednesday’s edition.
