Help us remember this season
Published November 29, 2009
Winter sports in our coverage area include basketball, wrestling and swimming.
Hoops action has always gotten the majority of ink on these pages, but we are going to try really hard to rectify that situation during 2009-10.
Some of the top wrestlers in the state compete in and around Walton County and — honestly — they have never gotten the publicity they’ve deserved. That’s my fault and I pledge here and now to do better.
Of course, that means I need your help. Coaches need to make sure they call or e-mail results from dual meets and tournaments throughout the year. Some — such as Randy Prater at Social Circle — have been very cordial in past years and we have failed him on more than one occasion. Again, my fault.
I like wrestling. I really do. Wrestling is one of those true sports where fingers can’t be pointed when the athlete is unsuccessful. You can’t blame a lineman for missing a block. You can’t blame a teammate for not making a free throw. You can’t blame a light-hitting infielder for striking out with the bases loaded. When you lose, you lose.
So, please coaches and fans who want their team publicized and not just their child, keep us updated — win or lose. There is simply too much going on for us to have staff members at more than a couple of events per night. We’ll do our best if you will.
The same goes for swimming. Coach Samantha Johnson at Loganville High School is very good at making sure we have the necessary information to spotlight her teams’ achievement. Social Circle and George Walton are dependable also. All you have to do is e-mail or fax a rundown sheet of the meet and we’ll take the time to pick out your swimmers and include their accomplishments in this section.
Basketball is more fan-friendly because more student-athletes participate and crowds are much larger than wrestling or swimming. So, basketball will continue to be our centerpiece in many editions. This isn’t to say we aren’t interested in any other sport. If you coaches will show us you want your kids’ names and numbers in the newspaper, we’ll do our part to make sure they receive the recognition they deserve. Now, lets go to work keeping promises.
