Ingui wins in go-karts division
Published May 19, 2006
LOGANVILLE — Patrick Ingui’s dream season continued last weekend as he qualified first and finished first in both of his two WKA Georgia State Series Go-Kart races at the North Georgia Mini Speedway.
The 11-year-old Team Full Throttle Motorsports Driver Development racer has won far more races than he’s lost this year.
“We’re very pleased with Patrick’s progress at such a young age,” his father Phil Ingui said. “What’s been so much fun to watch is how he’s matured with the feedback he gives to our crew chief Jeff Standridge.
“He likes the kart loose and it’s really something to watch him sometimes in the beginning of a race hanging the back end out like a sprint car. But once the tires come in, it’s just the way he likes it.”
Patrick became interested in racing at age 7. His father said Patrick tried every ball and stick sport there is, but couldn’t stand them.
“We went to watch a friend of ours race in Carnesville one night and Patrick told me he wanted to try it,” said Phil. “And we’ve been going steady ever since.”
Patrick is currently a fifth-grader at Walnut Grove Elementary School and will attend Youth Middle in the fall.
“I’m a racing fanatic,” he said. “I love every aspect of racing. I am in my ‘zone’ when I’m at a race track and the most comfortable when I’m sitting in the seat racing. I’m working hard this year to let my crew know what the kart needs when I get off the track to make it better for the next time.”
Phil and the team are very pleased with Patrick’s passing skills and the patience he shows in traffic. His father noted how far the youngster has come in that department.
“He’s really very calculating and seems to be able to feel the flow of the race and know when to make passes without getting himself in trouble,” said his dad. “My wife, Allison, and I look at each other sometimes and just shake our heads and laugh. He just loves it so much, and he studies the other karts he races against just to see where he might be able to get the edge.”
The race team consists of Patrick, Standridge, chassis specialist and dad Phil, team manager and mom Allison, tire specialist and videographer/sister Valerie, and Tom Baker. Baker is in charge of driver development and public relations, handling press releases and marketing materials.
“Tom owns Team Full Throttle. He is teaching me how to do better interviews and be a leader on and off the track,” said Patrick. “He will be helping my parents make the right decisions about my racing career so I can hopefull have a shot at racing in NASCAR someday.”
