Monroe gets ink in statewide publication

Published March 26, 2008

MONROE — Local leaders were happy to report the city made a splash in the latest edition of Georgia’s Cities, a statewide publication of the Georgia Municipal Association.

The city is highlighted in living color on the back page of the publication which is circulated to city officials throughout the Peach State.

The article focuses on the city’s efforts during “Georgia Cities Week” — the week of April 20-26

“We appreciate the recognition of our efforts from the GMA,” Mayor Greg Thompson said. “Georgia Cities Week is something that the City of Monroe has participated in for the last seven-plus years. Every year the event has become more and more successful. We are very excited about the events taking place this year.”

More than 130 cities are taking part in Georgia Cities Week this year. The week is designed to highlight the services and perks of downtown areas through the state.

The events actually kick off April 19 in Monroe, with a citywide yard sale, officials said.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of the week, downtown businesses will host sales.

From 4-7 p.m., on April 24, the city will celebrate City Government Day, providing free food for more than 2,000 people at city hall on the corner of Highland Avenue and Broad Street. The city will also show off its equipment and personnel, including a K-9 officer, bucket trucks and city street sweeper.

That same day, the Summer Kids Activity Fair will take place, from 4-7 p.m. There children will have a chance to play while parents will be offered information about summer activities. On April 25 the Monroe Art Guild will host its Art Walk and on April 26, the week concludes with the Walton County Music Guild Pops Concert.
