Republicans, pork ... and beans

Published June 14, 2009

Emptying out the political notebook ...

Come and get it. The annual GOP barbeque has been set for 5 p.m. June 29 at Walton County Republican Party Chairman Roy Roberts’ farm on Nunnally Farm Road.

“As usual we will have country music and delicious barbecue,” Roberts said.

Roberts said local officials will be joined by U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, Chairwoman of the state Republican Party Sue Everhart, five of the six candidates for governor, Casey Cagle (if he recuperates from his surgery), two candidates for secretary of state, commissioner of agriculture, candidates for insurance commissioner, a candidate for labor commissioner and State sens. David Shafer and Chip Rogers.

G-MAyor. Monroe Mayor Greg Thompson was named first vice president of the Georgia Municipal Association District 5 for the 2009-10 year.

Thompson and Mayor Ronnie Maxwell of Nicholson, who was named president, will serve on the GMA board of directors because of their new positions.

The final step in the election process will occur on June 22 at the GMA Annual Convention in Savannah. During the business meeting, a complete list of proposed GMA board of directors and district officers for the coming year will be voted on by the membership.

Everyone loves a parade. Monroe officials aren’t interested in putting an end to the parade, but they are interested in making more money on it.

The council voted last month to increase parade fees for large parades because of the increasing personnel costs it takes to man them and clean up after them.

Small parades requiring eight to 10 employees will still cost applicants $100. However, large parades take 18 or more employees and the cost will be $200, up $100.

The annual Walton County Special Olympics parade will not see an increase in fees.
