UPDATE: Drag strip faces further review

Published December 16, 2009

After listening to nearly a dozen people speak for and against a possible zoning action, the Social Circle City Council sent the project back to the Planning and Zoning Commission for further review.

An overflow crowd of more than 100 people came out to voice both support and opposition to the proposed re-zone of more than 100 acres along Interstate 20 and Highway 278 for use as a drag strip.

"We want something everyone can be satisfied with," said Donnie Clack, whose Little River Ventures is looking to create a motor-sports complex near the southeastern edge of Social Circle that would also include room for concerts, rodeo events and other entertainment options. "If we put our heads together, we can come up with something to benefit us all."

With the crowd split nearly in half between supporters and those against the proposed racetrack, the council spent nearly an hour listening to people on both sides of the issue as racing enthusiasts talked of increased revenue and providing outlets for area youth and opponents, many neighbors to the undeveloped land, talked of noise pollution.

With more conditions and restrictions under discussion, the council ultimately decided to send it back to planning and zoning, which will next meet in January. Mayor Jim Burgess said it would be likely be the February council meeting before the issue came before the council again, but emphasized there would be further opportunities at all meetings for the public to debate the issue.
