End comes for 233

Published July 30, 2010

LOGANVILLE — Rockdale blasted a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday to knock Loganville Post 233 out of the state American Legion baseball tournament.

The second loss in the double elimination event left Post 233 with a final record of 16-12 (up from 5-19 last summer) and secured a fourth-place finish in the state for manager Jimmy Hughes’ squad.

“We really came to play for the entire tournament,” Hughes said. “It just seemed like we were snakebit. Whenever we make a mistake it always came back to bite us, but we couldn’t take advantage of the other team’s mistakes. It might also have been a different story if we could have played all five games at full strength. We missed some key players at times for various reasons.”

Post 233 won three games and lost twice in the competition held at American Legion Field. The team scored more than 20 runs in two games while posting victories over Leesburg, Alpharetta and Albany. The two losses came to Conyers and Rockdale.

“I wished we could have pitched a little better and I definitely wished we had played better defense,” said Hughes. “If we catch a ground ball or a pop-up, we could have been playing for the whole thing Wednesday. However, when you have a young team like we have you are bound to make mistakes. We’re already excited about the core of players we have coming back next summer. Five starters have already committed to returning.”

Conyers ended up winning the tournament, beating Douglasville 17-7 in Wednesday’s championship game. Douglasville forced a deciding meeting between the two rivals to topping Conyers 7-6 on Tuesday.

In Loganville’s final game, it held a 5-3 lead going to the bottom of the ninth inning after a strong pitching performance by Trey Culpepper, who went seven innings. Brandon Cruce worked the eighth. The Loganville High School graduate walked two and was hurt by a pair of errors which led to Rockdale tying the game at 5-5 and sending it to extra innings.

Post 233 got two runners on in the top of the tenth, but couldn’t score. In the bottom of the inning, Justin Hughes took the mound. The workhorse of last summer’s team walked the first batter he faced and then gave up the game-winning homer.
