Monroe awarded $500K in CDBG funds
Published September 9, 2009
More than 900 people in Monroe will benefit from a $500,000 grant secured by the city to improve failing sewer infrastructure.
The Community Development Block Grant was applied for to improve the sewer system in one of the city’s lower-income areas located in and around Tall Oaks, Magnolia, Lacy, Towler, Pine Park and Davis streets and Kendall Court on the city’s southeast side.
“The most important thing we want to stress is that we are glad to get this grant so we won’t have to use local tax money,” said Mayor Greg Thompson. “As hard as it is to get grants these days, we are grateful to get this grant for the refurbishing of our sewers.”
The proposed project will benefit 924 persons of which 913 or 98.8 percent are of low to moderate incomes.
Thompson said it may be until 2010 before project gets started.
City officials need to choose a consultant and draw designs for the project, he said.
Monroe is sharing more than $32 million in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds this year with 64 other Georgia cities.
