Lady Warriors a force in Region 8-AA
Published September 30, 2009
While it usually takes a first-year program at least a couple of seasons to establish a winning tradition, the Walnut Grove High School softball team has proved to be an exception.
Even after dropping a 2-1 decision to second-ranked (Class AA) North Oconee last week, the Lady Warriors remain a leading candidate for postseason participation.
The Lady Titans scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and made them stand up for the win. Kara Patterson went on to toss a six-hitter with three strikeouts for coach Taylor Brooks.
“We played great defense after that first inning, as did they,” said Brooks. “Even though we lost, I think this is something we can build on because now we know we can play with the best in the state.”
WGHS is now 18-8 overall and 4-2 in the region. The Lady Warriors handed (AAA) Eastside a 9-0 blanking Sept. 23 as Patterson allowed one hit and had a perfect game for four-plus innings. Morgan Brown and Destiny Clyde and Taylor Merritt added a double to pace the offense.
Walnut Grove entertains Banks County at 5 p.m. Thursday in the final home game. Fans are asked to wear pink. A raffle will be held to benefit cancer research.
