Moss’ No. 12 retired by Loganville

Published January 27, 2008

LOGANVILLE — Brandon Moss, a 2002 Loganville High School graduate and current member of the Boston Red Sox major league baseball team, had his jersey number retired Tuesday.

The ceremony was held at halftime of the Loganville versus Winder-Barrow boys basketball game. Moss leaves Jan. 31 for spring training camp, hoping to land a spot on the defending World Series champions’ opening day roster. He played briefly with the parent club last season.

Moss holds virtually every offensive and pitching record in LHS history. Single season marks include batting average (.541), doubles (15), home runs (17), runs scored (44) and RBIs (48).

Moss’ career records include batting average (.464), doubles (38), homers (27), runs scored (101) and RBIs (102).

The right-hander was dominating on the mound as well, setting records for a season (114) and a career (220) in strikeouts. His 11 wins is a Red Devil high as were his two no-hitters.

During Moss’ career, he led Loganville to two region titles, two state playoff appearances, an Elite Eight finish in 2001, a state championship appearance in 2002 and a school-record 31 wins in 2002 which included 28 consecutive victories — also a record.

“Brandon’s work ethic on the field, in the batting cage and in the weight room is what separates him from other players,” said Jeff Segars, his high school coach. “I have never seen a player with as much drive as Brandon. It is no surprise that he has made it this far in professional baseball.”

Segars praised Moss for not only putting in the extra time needed for success while playing for the Diamond Devils, but for inspiring his teammates to do the same.

“It wasn’t unusual to see him running the bleachers at 6 a.m.,” said the coach.

Moss was drafted by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2002 major league draft.

Moss was a starter in the 2007 Class AAA Minor League All-Star Game for Pawtucket (R.I.), the Sox’s affiliate. He was first called to the majors last August for a brief stint and then re-joined the Red Sox when rosters were expanded for the month of September.
