LHS will remain in Region 8
Published December 25, 2009
The Georgia High School Association released its final list of region placements for its 435 member schools last week and for Walton County’s five GHSA schools, there were no surprises.
After all appeals were considered, the local schools stayed in the same league in which they were originally slotted on Dec. 2.
Loganville remained in Region 8-AAAA and Social Circle stayed in 8-A. Monroe dropped to 8-AAA, Walnut Grove moved up to 8-AAA, and George Walton Academy joined the GHSA as a member of 8-A.
Unlike past years, when regions were realigned every two years, schools will remain in their assigned regions for four years.
Only one change will be made in Region 8-AAAAA, where Grayson has resided for the past several years. Archer, a school in Gwinnett County that opened its doors last fall, will join what many believe is the strongest athletic region in the state. Traditional powers Parkview, Brookwood and South Gwinnett will remain in the fold.
The biggest impact will be felt by Monroe, Walnut Grove and GWA.
Most 8-AAA schools are located in Gainesville and points north, which will add considerably to travel time and expense for Monroe and Walnut Grove.
Meanwhile, GWA expects to save on its travel budget, which was its primary reason for leaving the Georgia Independent School Association for the GHSA.
This past fall, the Bulldogs football team had to travel twice to Albany, three times to Macon, and once to Bellville near Statesboro. Next fall, all of their regular-season opponents will be within an hour’s drive or less.
