Douglas back on the trail

Published November 22, 2009

With the ballot boxes still warm from the 2009 municipal elections in Walton County, state Sen. John Douglas is already looking forward to 2010.

The Social Circle Republican recently announced his bid for re-election to the 17th District, representing all of Newton and parts of Henry, Rockdale, Spalding and Walton counties.

Douglas, who has served in the Georgia Senate since January 2005, is seeking his fourth term.

“It is a great honor to represent the people of the 17th Senate District in Atlanta and I will continue to work to ensure that all of the citizens of these five counties have a voice when decisions are being made that impact our lives,” Douglas said.

Douglas is a familiar face here in Walton County, especially at events involving veterans.

Not afraid to speak his mind or mix it up with other public officials, Douglas is easily accessible, a perk for a journalist trying to keep tabs on the happening of the district.

According to a press release, he served one term in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2002-2004 and as a member of the Newton County Board of Education from 1998-2002. Prior to elected office, Douglas served as an Army Officer and retired from military service in 1994.

He is proud to note, he is the only person currently serving in the Georgia Senate who has had a full career in the military.

During the six years Douglas has served in the Senate, he has held the position of chairman of the Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee.

Having been named to the Senator of the Year award on six occasions, he recently worked to pass a bill preventing convicted sex offenders from running for or taking a seat on a school board.

Gun control? Higher taxes? Douglas is know to oppose both with venom.

Without an opponent yet, Douglas has plenty of time to hit the campaign trail unopposed.

However, whoever runs against Douglas better be prepared for a tough race.

Whether you like his politics or not, his tenacity on the campaign trail and for serving his constituents — especially here — is to be commended.
