Land donated to Walton Habitat for Humanity

Published January 10, 2007

MONROE — Habitat for Humanity of Walton County got a late Christmas present recently with the donation of two pieces of land on Turner Street.

The two lots, donated by Meridian Homes, one on Dec. 28, the other formally donated later this month, join several other houses already built by Habitat for Humanity in the neighborhood.

“We already have four Habitat families living on Turner Street,” said John Snyder, with the Walton County Habitat for Humanity, adding that the donation aids in what the group saw as the rehabilitation of the area. “Turner Street in the past has had a bad reputation, but we’re trying to turn that around, and so are the residents.”

“This donation helps us in our efforts to turn Turner Street around,” Snyder said.

The two lots will allow Habitat for Humanity to build three more houses on Turner Street which, along with some planned renovations that the group hopes to begin on current housing in the area, will continue to help the group improve the area.

“It’s becoming a nice family street now,” Snyder said.

Although Habitat for Humanity is currently building a house in Social Circle, Snyder said the Turner Street lots would be the next area to see houses go up.

The donation is an advantage in building more around the county, he said.

“This is a very generous gift,” Snyder said. “Having that lot donated to us is a big bonus in building a house. Property values are rising in Walton County, so already having the land, without having to buy some, helps us greatly.”

Snyder said he was pleased with the generosity of Meridian Homes, and hoped to see more involvement from local builders and community leaders.

“This is not the first time that Meridian had donated to Habitat,” Snyder said.

Joel Gregory, with Meridian Homes, said the donation was the company’s way of giving back.

“Meridian believes in what Habitat for Humanity of Walton County stands for and what it’s doing for the community,” Gregory said. “Meridian wants to give back to this community.”

While other Habitat for Humanity groups scramble to find affordable land in other counties, Snyder said the donation would allow Walton County to continue to erect houses in the near future.

“Over in Gwinnett County, they can’t find land to buy because of the high property values,” Snyder said. “This gift is very, very important to us.”
