East Atlanta Mustangs begin preseason Monday

Published July 23, 2010

For student-athletes who want to play football this season, but attend a private school that doesn’t field a team or are home schooled, the East Atlanta Mustangs are offering an opportunity.

Tryouts for boys ages 13-18 will be at 5:45 p.m. July 26 at the Rockdale Baptist Church in Conyers. Shorts and cleats only will be needed for the first week. The season begins Aug. 27 with a home game against Northside Christian. At least three Walton County residents are expected to be on the roster in 2010.

The Mustangs compete in the Glory for Christ Football League which is made up of four christian schools and four composite teams from the Atlanta area. This is 11-man tackle high school football. For more information log on to georgiafootballleague.com.

The Mustangs are based in Rockdale County and practice at Rockdale Baptist Church off Sigman Road, not far from the DeKalb County line.

“We want kids to know the opportunity is there,” said first-year Mustangs’ coach Joe Blount. “Sometimes parents think they have to give up sports or other extracurricular activities to go to a private school. But we want to let the kids know the chance is there to play football.”

The Mustangs started six years ago when the league formed. The other teams in the league are located in suburban Atlanta and as far away as Carrollton and Dalton. The Mustangs went 5-5 last season and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Blount is looking to grow the football program. Twenty-five players showed up for spring practice.
