Late drive saves Red Devils

Published October 12, 2008

LOGANVILLE — Loganville passed a major stress test at homecoming Friday with a fourth-quarter scoring drive that allowed the Red Devils to notch a 13-10 win over Madison County.

Loganville improved to 5-1 in Region 8-AAAA while the Red Raiders fell 2-5. The victory sets up a first-place showdown between the Devils and Apalachee Friday in Bethlehem.

Trailing 10-6 with 1 minute, 59 seconds to go in the contest, Loganville got possession of the football at its own 14 yard line. Quarterback A.J. Schmidt was sacked on first down, moving the ball back to the 11. Then, with the aid of tremendous blocking up front and some clutch catches by his receivers, Schmidt went to work.

The junior completed five straight passes to three different receivers, taking the ball down to the Madison County 15 yard line with 1:04 on the scoreboard clock.

During the march, Schmidt hooked up with Clay Garner for an 18-yard gain to the 29. On the next play he hit Trey Culpepper with a bullet over the middle for 18 more yards to the 47. Garner then made a 7-yard catch at the Red Raiders’ 45. Consecutive completions to Culpeppers and Sam Jones, each covering 15 yards, gave Loganville a first down at the Madison County 15 with :45 left in the game.

Schmidt, who ended the night with 10 completions in 20 attempts for 171 yards, misfired on his next two catchable throws.

On third-and-10, Schmidt found Culpepper for a 13-yarder down to the 2 yard line, giving Loganville a first-and-goal.

Devin Genske went over right guard through a gaping hole on the next play for the game-winning touchdown with :31 to go.

Tyler Zielenske added the conversion to put the Red Devils in front, 13-10.

Madison County made things interesting on the ensuing kickoff as the Red Raiders drove down to the Loganville 21 before having a potentially game-tying field goal of 38 yards partially blocked as time expired.
