Local teen killed in car crash
Published April 8, 2009
WALTON COUNTY — A senior at Monroe Area High School was killed last week when his car ran off the road and struck a utility pole.
According to Walton County Sheriff’s Office officials, Thomas Rawlings, 18, of Old Tanners Bridge Road, Monroe, was killed in a single-car accident late Thursday night. The accident happened on Carl Davis Road while Rawlings was reportedly driving home from work. According to reports, Rawlings lost control of his vehicle and ran off the road, eventually striking a utility pole.
Rawlings was reportedly not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Law enforcement and emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after the accident but Rawlings would be pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is certainly a tragedy,” said WCSO Chief Deputy Bruce Wright. “He was a senior at Monroe Area High. If anything is learned from this, it should be that it is important for everyone to wear their seat belt.”
Additional details of the accident were not released as the Georgia State Patrol was still investigating the accident. This was the second fatality of the year on Walton County’s roadways.
