Social Circle knocks off ACS in region play

Published January 23, 2008

SOCIAL CIRCLE — Just how good is the Social Circle girls basketball team?

The Lady Redskins improved to 12-3 with an 81-48 win over Athens Christian last Friday. They are atop Region 8-A South with a 3-0 mark and their average margin of victory is in the double digits.

A scheduled showdown with Towns County on Saturday would have been a great measuring stick. But the inclement weather forced the game to be postponed.

Fortunately, the Social Circle girls will have another chance to prove they are for real this Saturday when they host cross-county rival Monroe. Because of a scheduling conflict, both the boys and girls games will be played at Social Circle Elementary School.

“It’s a big deal,” said Social Circle girls coach Crystal Wood. “I’m not from Social Circle or Monroe, but I know it means a lot to both schools.”

It may mean the most to the Lady Redskins, who have lost to Monroe four straight years. In fact, the last time Social Circle beat Monroe was 2004, when Wood’s daughter Shekiya Tarpkins was the star of the team. Tarpkins virtually re-wrote the school’s record book while leading her team to the state final four.

Wood believes this years team may be better than her 2004 squad.

“We’re a lot more versatile,” Wood said. “Unlike that other team, we don’t know who’s going to be our leading scorer from one game to the next. This team is a lot deeper.”

It’s also more experienced. The top five girls have a combined 16 years of starting experience.

Seniors Brittany Hester and Sequoyah Thurman, both four-year starters, are the team’s main scoring threats. They combined for 40 points against Athens Christian.

Senior Marissa Heard, a third-year starter, is the top rebounder and inside force. She had nine points and eight boards in Friday’s victory.

Juniors Jolessa Williams and Brianna Williams are solid role players who have raised their games another level this season.

They’ll face their biggest test of the year when they step up two classes to take on Monroe, which plays in region 8-AAA.

Pass that test, and the Lady Redskins can start dreaming big.
