Weekend wedding empties the nest
Published November 2, 2007
This is a big weekend for my family — my blended family that is. My husband and I have four children between us and the last one of the bunch, the baby, is getting married Saturday.
For those of you who might know him, he is my stepson Brad Winterburn — Loganville High School graduating class of 2002 — Varsity soccer top goal scorer and MVP 2002. Yep — we are pretty proud of Brad. He is taking the plunge this weekend and marrying Jamie Tallent (Grayson High School graduating class of 2003 for those of you who might know Jamie.)
This wedding has been almost a year in the making and it has been planned right down to the very last detail. Of the other three weddings we had in our family — one was in Disneyworld, one was in Gatlinburg, one surprised us and just invited us over for wedding cake one day and now we finally get a traditional one — and Brad is nothing if he isn’t traditional.
The rehearsal dinner has been planned right down to the last detail and will be tonight at Twisted Oak in Monroe. The wedding is tomorrow at the Methodist Church in Bethlehem. He has his brother and half the 2002 graduating class of LHS as groomsmen (well maybe not quite) to match just the right number of sisters and 2003 graduating class of GHS bridesmaids. He has the perfect honeymoon planned and I’m sure if we look on his four-year calendar we’ll find the future birth date of the first of the two and a half children they plan to have.
Of course, being the family of the groom makes it really easy for us. Jamie’s family gets to do all the hard work and we get to turn up and enjoy the party. But in all seriousness, this is a big step for anyone but knowing how Brad doesn’t do anything without planning for it down to the most intricate detail, I’m sure he is going into this with his eyes wide open and knows he’s making the right choice. I wish both he and Jamie all the best of luck for a bright and happy future together. Although Brad is the youngest of the four children (by just two days), there are times when his maturity level outpaces all the other kids put together. In fact, there are times it even outpaces most of the elders in the family too so I’m sure this marriage has all the makings of one that will stand the test of time.
Now for the good part — with all of them married off we can finally kick back and really enjoy ourselves. If somebody doesn’t pick their clothes up off the bedroom floor — it’s no longer our problem. If somebody walks through the house without taking off their muddy shoes — it’s no longer our problems.
Heck, even if someone outgrows their clothes (and I have no doubt that will continue to happen) — now it’s no longer our problem.
All of them have been out the house for a while now so this isn’t a new revelation but this final marriage finally seals it. We are officially empty-nesters and can take full advantage of all those great AARP benefits.
We have, however, been warned by many that if we are not careful they come back home and then they usually bring others with them.
We are being very careful.
