Favorite time of the year
Published February 28, 2010
Major league baseball players have reported to Florida and Arizona, high school baseball and soccer teams have hit the field with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, college football is again becoming part of our everyday conversation and prep basketball is in its postseason tournament mode. This could only mean one thing — spring is right around the corner.
I love springtime. Always have. Though I have to admit the coldest I’ve ever been is watching tennis in March with the wind blowing up a gale and the thermometer showing numbers low enough as to suggest we should be inside.
The thing about springtime is your mind tells you if you’re watching a baseball game or tennis match, it should be warm. Thus, your body forgets to condition itself for the elements and it’s even more miserable than ever.
And the older I get the more I despise the cold. Remember when we were kids and we could stay outside forever in short sleeves, running and playing and completely ignoring the the elements. My mind takes me back just a few years to when it never got too cold or rainy to play golf. Not the case any more. I haven’t picked up a golf club in three months because these old bones take too long to loosen up in the frigid conditions. By the time the creaking sounds stop during my swing, its the 16th hole and my scorecard is showing numbers rivaling the national debt.
However, aside from being uncomfortable, it really is a good time of year to be alive. The days start getting longer and Daylight Savings Time is ready to make its yearly appearance, meaning high school golfers will come closer to completing their regulation nine holes.
Springtime means it’s time to leave those hot gymnasiums and get out into the fresh air. The sound of baseball meeting leather replaces the voice some leather-lunged fan screaming at a basketball referee. The smell of hot dogs and french fries make us forget out that diet we suffered through during the winter months and reminds us to enjoy the simple things in life. After all, we can always buy new clothes.
Springtime is almost here. Let’s all get outside very soon and enjoy it.
