Cougars demolish Heritage 57-7

Published October 23, 2009

Covenant Christian Academy defeated the Crusaders of Heritage Christian 57-7 last Friday night, playing in front of a cold and shivering Senior Night crowd at Cougarville Stadium. It was Covenant’s last regular season home game and the Cougars didn’t disappoint their fans. It also put an exclamation point on a team many feel is the top team in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia-Alabama conference.

The Cougars marched down the field on their first possession and never looked back. Led by running back Tyler Bliss, CCA rushed for a season high 416 yards. Bliss contributed 200 yards on his own account, averaging nearly 14.5 yards per carry. In addition to scoring the first Cougar touchdown, Bliss contributed two more TDs on the night, all on big yardage plays from scrimmage, maintaining his average of over 20 points per game.

The offensive onslaught was controlled by freshman quarterback Michael Barton.

“Michael plays way beyond his years in controlling the flow of our offense,” said CCA head coach Robert McCready. Seven Cougar running backs accounted for the 416 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.

The game actually started like the Crusaders were going to control the line of scrimmage, stuffing a couple of rushes up the middle. But offensive coordinator Josh McCready used a little misdirection and sweeps to spread the Crusader defense out and create confusion.

Defensively, the Crusaders were held to 116 total yards in offense and only six first downs. Coach Alan Thrift’s Cougar defense forced three Crusader interceptions. The defense was led by cornerback Alex Williams with five tackles and an assist, followed by sophomore safety Jordan Argo with four tackles and an assist and Aaron Cline with four tackles and an assist.

“The boys are taking their assignments seriously and working as a team,” said McCready “We are a difficult team to sustain a drive on right now because we are flying to the ball. I am proud of their commitment to effort and excellence.”

The 6-1, 2-1 Cougars travel to Hiram tonight to face the 5-3, 2-1 Grace Baptist Christian School in a key regional tilt that will determine home field advantage as both teams head into the state playoffs next week.

This will be the second year in a row the Cougars have qualified for the state playoffs.

“We are proud of the direction of our football program,” said CCA athletic director Tommy Wiggins. “The organization and success coach McCready has brought to the school has put us in a position to be an elite team within our conference.

“This success has permeated throughout the school and all of our athletic programs.”

McCready said tonight’s matchup with Grace is one of the most important football games since his arrival at CCA.

“But that’s just for us, parents and fans,” said the coach. “We are preparing the boys as normal and not getting caught up in it. They are prepared and ready to play Cougar football.”
