Cougars claw way to 2nd win
Published September 4, 2009
Coach Bob McCready's Covenant Christian Academy Cougars marched into Powder Springs Saturday for their first regional tilt of the season — against Praise Academy — and did not disappoint the fans who made the trip.
A huge Covenant contingent witnessed a complete game rout as the Cougars moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia-Alabama eight-man football standings with a 60-14 win. The game was originally scheduled for Friday night but was moved due to weather conditions.
The game started out like it might be a dogfight as Praise took the opening kickoff and marched down the field, frustrating the Cougar defenders. But down inside the Cougar 20, the defense stiffened and took over on downs.
From there, the Cougars took control of the game. CCA scored on its first possession on a touchdown run by Tyler Bliss and never looked back.
On the next Praise possession, Bliss again scored as he intercepted a pass from his cornerback position deep in the Cougar zone and returned it for an 80-yard TD.
“I thought our kids were opportunistic on defense and relentless on the offensive side the entire game,” McCready said.
Behind the passing of freshman quarterback Michael Barton, the Cougars dented the scoreboard again with a touchdown pass to sophomore wideout J.C. Bradley, closing out the first quarter scoring with the Cougars leading 24-0.
The second quarter continued the highlight reel for the Cougars as they scored a second touchdown on an interception on a long return, this time by junior safety John Turner.
Even with McCready substituting players at will, the Cougars continued to move the ball and play well on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
Covenant Christian amassed 407 yards in total offense, with 267 rushing yards by 10 different ball carriers. The leading rusher for the Cougars was sophomore Jordan Argo with 90 yards on three carries.
Barton was 3-for-5 for 140 yards through the air. He actually had another long TD pass nullified by a penalty. Barton's main target was junior wideout Jordan Hardee with two catches for 60 yards. The lopsided contest allowed McCready to cut down on carries by his senior workhorse running back Tyler Bliss, giving him a chance to stay rested and healthy for tonight’s regional matchup at home against North Georgia Christian.
Defensively, the Cougars were led by sophomore linemen Brandon Green and DJ Roman and senior lineman Aaron Cline, who had six tackles each. Overall, 16 Cougar players recorded tackles to go along with two interceptions with two returned for touchdowns.
The special teams executed well with junior John Turner handling the kickoff duties. The Cougars did not punt in the game.
The team welcomed back senior running back Alex Williams, who returned from a knee injury during the summer.
“Alex had a good game for us,” McCready said. “He recorded a touchdown, ran the extra point and played his defensive position in his limited action. He is being brought back slowly.”
McCready said he was pleased with the game and the effort of his players, but wanted to see the team cut down on penalties.
“The penalties occurring behind the ball, behind the play, is what we will correct,” he said. “With all the Cougar fans, it felt like a home game. Very exciting.”
Tonight’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Legion Field in Monroe.
