Meet the new guy in town
Published June 7, 2009
I’m the new guy in town, so I think we need to get off on the right foot — with honesty.
Honestly, two weeks ago I had no concept that I’d be in Monroe, Ga., today. Work was going well for me, and Patrick Graham had things going well here.
So much can change in the blink of an eye, and I was stunned when I found out Southern Newspapers Inc. was offering me the chance to follow Patrick here at The Walton Tribune.
I called the lovely Carla at work and asked if she was ready for a move. To show you one of the reasons why I love her so much, she jumped at the opportunity.
That’s why we spent last weekend traveling through much of Walton County to get a look at our new home.
I must say we were impressed. There is so much natural beauty here that I can’t wait to get out and explore further. And it’s obvious this is a community that takes pride in itself, with strong leadership from the business community.
I look forward to getting to meet you, but I’ll start by introducing myself.
My newspaper career began in 1997 as a high school student. It’s something I always wanted to do, and I couldn’t believe I ever got paid for it.
I attended the University of Montevallo, a small liberal arts college near Birmingham. It’s where I met Carla. I was newspaper editor; she was yearbook editor. I fell hard, and I fell quickly.
We’ve been married for six years.
I’m a member of the United Methodist Church, and finding a new church home is a top priority. For that matter, so is finding a home at all. I want to be here with Carla so we can begin our new life together as soon as possible.
But for the time being, she’ll be ending her job as a social worker and preparing our house in Alabama to sell.
It’s going to be a tough few months in some ways, but it’s thrilling in others. The chance to lead a newspaper in a community that Patrick spoke so highly of is the chance of a lifetime, and I intend to make the most of it.
Honestly.
