Joe Chapman

Sheriff Joe Chapman, a Republican from Monroe, began his fourth term in 2017.

MONROE — The teenage murder suspect accused of shooting two men who came to Walton County to sell something is from the county, Sheriff Joe Chapman said.

The victims came to the area for a transaction facilitated on a social media site, Chapman said.

“They were from Meriwether County, and they brought an item up here to sell,” Chapman said. “They did it on like a Craigslist, yard sale, social media thing. Somebody from Walton County said, bring it up, we’ll pay you for it; they actually robbed them for it. We have made one arrest to a 16-year-old juvenile.”

Chapman declined to say what the item was.

The suspect has not been identified due to his age. He is charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

State troopers were called Monday afternoon to a one-vehicle crash on Clegg Farm Road, just outside Social Circle. A 1996 Toyota Tacoma ran off the road and struck an embankment. Two men were found dead inside the truck.

But Chapman said the men didn’t die from the crash.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Social Circle police were brought in on the case.

Chapman said investigators planned to serve search warrants Tuesday night. He said there are other adult suspects in the case.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has issued a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of others who may have been involved in the case.
