COVINGTON, Ga. — Classes at Walnut Grove Elementary School will remain under a lockdown through the end of the day, even though police think a person they were seeking has left the area.

Students were kept under a low-level lockdown Wednesday due to what school officials are calling an “unrelated issue” away from campus.

Callen Moore, public information officer for the Walton County School District, said the Level 1 lockdown was instituted “as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our students.”

Moore said the incident prompting the lockdown was unrelated to the school and occurred several miles from the campus, which is located on Georgia 81.

But at about 1:30 p.m., Moore said police had no reason to think the person remained in the area.

Still, as a precaution, the school will remain on a lockdown until dismissal at 3:20 p.m., and there will be an increased presence of law enforcement on campus when students are sent home.

“All students are safe and normal activities will continue to resume inside the building until the end of the day,” Moore said.
