Days after the Walton County Board of Education passed a calendar for the 2018-29 school year, the Social Circle Board of Education followed suit with a remarkably similar schedule for the coming school year.

The school board passed the preliminary calendar draft unanimously at its regular monthly meeting Thursday and it shares a few dates with the Walton schools' calendar.

Like the Walton County School District, the Social Circle City Schools will begin its school year on Wednesday, Aug. 1, and end the school year 180 class days later on Friday, May 24.

The two school systems also share Thanksgiving break, which will last a week between Nov. 19-23; Spring Break, which runs a week between April 1-5; and both are taking Good Friday off on April 29.

Unlike Walton County, which takes a full week of fall break Oct. 15-19, Social Circle will take four holiday dates in October, beginning with a teacher work-day Thursday, Oct. 4, then full holidays for staff and students on Friday, Oct. 5, and the following Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8-9. And while Walton County is taking three days of winter break in February, Social Circle will take only two, beginning on President's Day, Monday, Feb. 18, and the following day.

Social Circle will also take off for Christmas holiday one day earlier than Walton County, leaving for the season on Dec. 19 rather than Dec. 20, but returning on Jan. 2, opposed to Jan. 4 for the Walton system.

The proposed calendar will remain on the table for 30 days and will be formally adopted at the January meeting of the board.
