The Walton County Board of Education has announced its intention to fill the District 6 seat on the board, previously held by Gwen Cantrell, and is looking for candidates to replace the outgiong board member.

Cantrell announced her resignation from the board earlier in the month as she is moving out of the district to help care for a family member.

Cantrell still had two years left in her term on the board and board policy allows the board to appoint someone to finish the reamainder of the term rather than hold a special election.

Interested candidates who live in District 6 and would like to serve on the board are asked to submit a letter of interest to the attention of Tom Gibson, chairman of the Walton County Board of Education, by 4:30 p.m. May 31.

Previous vacancies have been filled this way, as the board narrows down the interested candidates to a field of finalists before interviewing the remaining candidates to pick a new board member.

The chosen candidate will be sworn in to the board this summer and will serve on the board for the remainder of Cantrell’s unserved term, which is set to expire at the end of 2020.

All letters can be mailed to the Walton County Board of Education, 200 Double Springs Road, Monroe, GA 30655.
