The Walton County Board of Education approved the final draft of its calendar for the next school year in a meeting that otherwise kept everything essentially the same for the school system.

As is customary for the opening meeting of the new year, the school board voted on officers, but made no changes, nominating and approving without opposition Tom Gibson and Diane Turner to continue in their roles as chair and vice chair of the Board of Education for the next 12 months.

The calendar was approved unanimously after sitting on the table for 30 days following the tentative approval last month.

The 2019-20 schedule has school beginning on Aug. 1 and ending May 20, a rare Thursday dismissal that leaves the system time to determine when graduation ceremonies will be held for each high school.

Fall break will occur from Oct. 14-18, with Thanksgiving holiday Nov. 25-29 and Christmas holiday from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, 2020, with school resuming Jan. 6.

Winter break will occur in February, with days off for students on Feb. 14 and 17-18, while spring break will last from April 6-10.

Other holidays will occur on Labor Day, Sept. 2; Veterans Day, Nov. 11; and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20.

Easter occurs late in the season, on April 12, meaning Good Friday will fall during spring break rather than serving as an optional holiday/make-up day as in years past.
