Laythan Folgman

Laythan Folgman (14) carries for George Walton Academy, eluding Prince Avenue Christian defender Ethan Garner (8) in the first half of the teams’ region high school football game Friday night, Oct. 30, 2020, in Monroe, Ga.

Game of the Week

  • Who: Athens Academy (7-1, 1-1) at George Walton (6-1, 2-1)
  • When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
  • Where: Don Williams Stadium, Monroe
  • Series: Athens Academy leads series 9-1
  • Last: Athens Academy 38, George Walton 6 (October 11, 2019)

Having both been routed by top-ranked Prince Avenue, George Walton and Athens Academy are left battling it out for second place in Region 8-A private.

The issue will be decided Friday night at Don Williams Stadium.

For the Spartans (7-1, 2-1 Region 8-A private), the game will be the regular-season finale. For the Bulldogs (7-1, 2-1 Region 8-A private), they’ll close out the schedule the following week as heavy favorites over Loganville Christian.

Both have already secured a state berth. But the winner will get to open the second season at home while the loser will hit the road.

The Bulldogs would love nothing better than to earn the runner-up spot at the expense of one of their most bitter rivals.

After spending much of the season ranked No. 1 in the state among Class A private schools, the Spartans fell from their lofty perch after being upset, and routed, by Prince Avenue three weeks ago. It was their first regular-season loss in four years.

Athens Academy has a potent offense led by fourth-year starting quarterback Palmer Bush. His favorite target is four-star receiver and Notre Dame commit Deion Colzie, who’s been hampered recently by a foot injury.
