It was a historic Saturday for George Walton Academy as two Bulldogs grapplers earned individual state wrestling titles at the Georgia High School Association traditional state championship tournament.

Seniors Chris Sperin and Patrick Morris won state titles at 145 pounds and 170 pounds, respectively. The two are the first GWA wrestlers to win individual state titles in the GHSA since the school became a member in 2010.

For Social Circle it was a bit of a down year. However, the Redskins still finished with five state placers to earn fifth place in the final team standings.

“If that’s a down year for us, I’ll take it,” Redskins head coach Randy Prater said. “That’s still impressive to have that many guys get to the state tournament.”

Will Hames won an individual state title at 152 pounds while Tyler Snowden finished as the state runner-up at 126 pounds. Lance Thacker (106) and Jacob Bregman (145) each placed fifth in the state tournament.

Walnut Grove finished the tournament with a program best four state placers. Zach Coleman finished fifth at 106 pounds, Sam Pinder finished sixth at 132 pounds, Jonathan Paramore finished fourth at 170 pounds and Dalton Dimsdale finished sixth at 220 pounds.

The Warriors finished 10th overall in the team standings.
