RED DEVILS (Boys)
Coach: Robert Silver(Seventh season)
Last season: 7-10-1, 3-2 8-AAAAA
Playoff results: Lost in first round of state playoffs
Key returners: Davis Gilbert (So.), Adrian Guzman (Sr.), Elijah Mauldin (Jr.) Jose Medrano (Jr.), Alex Rodriguez (So.), Bodie Weeks (Sr.)
Key newcomers: D Tyler Cunningham (So.)
Team strengths: Bringing Cunningham up from junior varsity will allow Rodriguez, one of the Red Devils strongest defensemen last year, to play a more free-flowing game at the midfield position which should open up the offense. Loganville also brings back leading goal-scorer Gilbert as well as goalkeeper and team captain Guzman giving the Red Devils strength on both the front and back-ends of the field.
Areas to improve: Loganville is not the biggest in terms of individual size which gives then a weakness when it comes to corner kicks and free kicks in to the box. Positioning and discipline will be key if they don’t want to get exposed on headers from opposing teams.
Outlook: Two of the Red Devils most impactful players last year (Gilbert and Rodriguez) were freshman. Coach Silver is expecting them to make a big jump in their second year with the team. Moving some of their key players to the midfield position will also give Loganville a different dynamic and hopefully a more complete team in 2020 as they look to not only make the playoffs but to advance in the state tournament.
Coach: Jim Mitchell (Sixth season)
Last season: 12-6, 3-2 8-AAAAA
Playoff results: Lost in second round of state playoffs
Key returners: Audrey Hurd (Jr.), Abby Lassiter (Sr.), Shelby Pye (Jr.), Deborah Ruiz (Sr.), Madi Wilson (Sr.)
Key newcomers: Maddie Ennis (Jr.), Nadia Janousek (So.), Courtney McClure (Fr.), Rylee Sargent (Fr.), Madison Walker (Fr.), Caroline Wright (Fr.)
Team strengths: With 11 returning players who have started matches, the Lady Red Devils have one of their deepest teams in recent memory. Properly managing minutes will be key, but if everyone buys into their role, there is no reason this team can’t make another run in the state tournament.
Areas to improve: Despite so much starting experience, the majority of the starters last season were freshmen. Coach Mitchell knows his team must improve on their maturity and team play as the sophomore class continues to build chemistry in their second year together.
Outlook: Coach Mitchell expects nothing less than a return to the state playoffs. The Lady Red Devils are in an odd spot with an experienced, yet young team. The season could go either way depending on if their young core continues to focus on improving their game or gets over-confident and regresses. Mitchell expects the former to happen and if that’s the case, Loganville could go deep into the state tournament.
